She was raised in a working class neighborhood, which seems to be what gave her the sensitivity to deep social issues. Class struggle, gender struggle and all issues of injustice were her motivators.
She achieved success in 1991 with her solo exhibition City Racing. The exhibition was of collages made from British newspaper front pages depicting themes such as sex, deformity, violence and sensationalism, many of the elements were associated with the YBAs Young British Artists.
Her works, always with tinges of humanity, can unsettle the viewer and generate discomfort. They are also often moving because of the depth of their subject matter.
She likes to work with found objects and materials from everyday life that can invoke the absurd, the vulgar and grotesque, but that together take force to establish a direct relationship with the viewer.
Below is a video of an exhibition at the Red Brick Art Museum in Beijing and some photographs so you can appreciate her art.
